A hardened ex-con returns to his family in the Bronx and struggles to stay on the right side of the law as his overburdened wife guards a sensitive secret about their 16-year-old son. Enrique (Esai Morales) has just served three years of hard time. He’s determined to reconnect with his wife Angela (Judy Reyes), whose uncharacteristic silence confuses and frustrates him as he determined to give their teenage son Michael the kind of macho swagger that will help him to survive on the streets. What Enrique fails to realize – and what his wife has struggled to keep a secret – however, is the fact that during the time his father has been in prison, Michael has began to realize that he is a woman trapped in a man’s body. Now, as Michael’s transformation into a woman becomes too obvious for his mother to cover up, Enrique’s struggle to cast aside his machismo attitude and give his son with unconditional love leads the conflicted father down a dangerous path. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Jack Kerouac’s seminal pseudo-autobiography finally heads to the big screen thanks to director Walter Salles Jr. (The Motorcycle Diaries) and executive producer Francis Ford Coppola. The tale is semi-based on the author’s trips across America, with fiction intertwining with reportedly real events and people met along the way. The starring cast includes Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley, and Kirsten Dunst. José Rivera provides the adaptation. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

In A Dark Truth, Garcia plays an ex-CIA op-turned political talk show host. He’s hired by a corporate whistle blower to expose her company’s cover-up of a massacre in a South American village. The film draws attention to man’s inhumanity and unconscious actions against the environment and questions if there is a moral and ethical obligation when talking about boundaries, borders and human interaction. With the ever-increasing depletion of earth’s natural resource of water serving as the backdrop, a multi-national corporation disregards basic human needs that result in widespread illness and a people’s uprising. The distress causes unlikely allies to conspire and seek redemption for past deeds and the greater good.

Like nowhere else in the Unites States, Wyoming has become the indelible symbol of the legendary Old Wild West where vast untouched prairies and the magnificent Rocky Mountains make up the wonderful scenery of this cowboy state. Sometimes erroneously referred to as ‘buffalo,’ the bison is probably the most famous animal that roams the North American plains and is known by the Sioux Indians as, ‘tatanka’. In addition to prairie land, bison can also be found in forest areas such as The Grand Teton National Park. Once a year the otherwise peaceful town of Sturgis is transformed into one of the largest motorcycle gatherings in the world. For an entire week, everything focuses upon chrome, horsepower and the name, Harley Davidson. Motorcyclists travel here from each corner of the United States and in the year 2000 more than 600000 enthusiasts visited the event. The most spectacular section of the Wind River is located in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone National Park. The canyon’s most prominent landmarks are the 33 and 94 meter high Upper and Lower Falls. Much of the striking scenery of the Wind River Valley now belongs to the Shoshone and Arapho Indian Reservation. The Jackson Hole Rodeo has retained its age-old charm, unlike the far more popular and larger venues to be found in the country’s major cities that attract thousands of visitors. Tatanka is a living symbol of the Great Plains in the State of Wyoming and still embodies life in the Wild West of old. The legends

America: on the Road to Equality – or Not

America: on the Road to Equality – or Not

For Gay Americans like me, the last couple of years have been good ones for us. We have seen the end of href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/18/dont-ask-dont-tell-repeal_5_n_798636.html">DODT (Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell) so that our gay brothers and sisters cannot only serve, but serve honestly and openly about their sexuality.

We have also seen the very first American president make a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/09/obama-gay-marriage_n_1503245.html">statement saying that he supports gay marriage. Along with that, we have several states, which have legalized same-sex marriage across America. Gay people are now accepted by a majority of Americans as friends and good neighbors, along with our right to marry. Many of us can still remember a time when being gay could cause you the loss of a job or housing, or even arrest. For someone like me, I am amazed at the speed that approval for gay rights has grown in the last few years in this country

I am also certain that President Obama’s second term will reward Hispanic voters this term with comprehensive immigration reform, as he failed to do in his first term, but then, he had a mountain of opposition standing in his way; the GOP.

Women can also celebrate a victory in the href="http://www.lillyledbetterfairpayact.com/home.html">Lilly Ledbetter Act  signed into law by Barack Obama, which moves women forward in their goal to be treated equally in the workplace. The number of women on the U.S. Supreme Court has finally gone up, thanks to Obama’s nominations. Barack Obama has shown himself to be a strong supporter of women’s issues, not just claim to be.

Still, I think we have a long way to go for this nation’s struggle for equality. Many struggle financially, even though they work hard for a living. Our biggest obstacle to equality is obtaining fair pay and benefits for all workers. Our unions have been under href="http://www.southernstudies.org/2012/02/unions-in-the-crosshairs.html">attack in a few states and Right-to-Work laws are being implemented, thereby limiting unionization in those states.

I understand the need for unions to change but unions are what have kept wages higher for all of us, even non-union workers. Right-to-Work states that limit union power enjoy href="http://mediamatters.org/research/2011/05/19/right-wing-media-twist-the-facts-on-right-to-wo/179798">lower wages than other states.

So yes, thanks in no small part, to a moderately progressive and practical president as Barack Obama and all of his administration that this country has moved forward. This last congress did nothing but stand in the way and we can only hope that will not be the case for the new 113th Congress. We need lawmakers — not Democrats or Republicans — to work together for the good of this nation and get things done. We need an end to the gridlock partisan politics we have seen enough of in the last few years.

On a personal level, I hope for an end to the href="http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/law/gay_marriage/act.html">Defense of Marriage Act because it is unconstitutional, limiting equal rights for a minority of Americans, gay people. That would be another big step for equality and even a bigger step when the federal government begins to recognize same-sex marriages.

Yes, I believe that America is on the road to equality, but there remain many more miles to go.

Bead-Reader: A New Segment on Fidlerten Place

Within the next couple of days, Fidlerten Place will be launching a new segment   called Bead-Reader. It is culled from a catchphrase used in the gay community from at least as far back as the sixties and perhaps further. Someone might say, “Did you here that girl read his beads? She sure told him!” or “I just read her beads, that (expletive)!”

It means to tell someone off really well. If you “read someone’s beads”, you are giving them the “what for”.  I am sure most of us can remember a time we would have liked to straighten someone out on a few facts and give them a piece of our mind.

Once a week, if not more, I will be publishing a Bead-Reader. This will be done by either:

    1. Find a blog or some other bit of journalism that the Bead-Reader finds ridiculous, non-factual, and just read-the-beads of the author of that article.
    2. Finds a politician, a corporation or some other entity that needs someone to give them a few facts and needs their beads read.
    3. Lambast society in general or government or even God (respectfully of course). Wherever there is someone or something that needs a good bead- reading, this is the place to let it fly.

I do welcome any of my visitors to offer up any piece of drivel they would like to debunk by a little Bead-Reading. Just contact me at href="mailto:fidlerten@hotmail.com">fidlerten@hotmail.com with your entry and if I like your article, I will publish it on Fidlerten Place.

Look for a posting from the Bead-Reader on Fidlerten Place soon.

Director Bruce Beresford brings Jane Fonda back to the screen in this comedy-drama about a mother and daughter who have precious little in common. Diane (Catherine Keener) is a straight-laced Republican lawyer who lives in Manhattan with her teenage children Zoe (Elizabeth Olsen) and Jake (Nat Wolff). However, Diane’s marriage to Mark (Kyle MacLachlan) has fallen apart, and after receiving the final divorce papers, she needs to get out of the city for a while. Diane and her kids head to upstate New York, where she’s decided it’s time they met her mother Grace (Jane Fonda). Unlike her daughter, Grace was and is a proud hippie, the unofficial leader of the town’s countercultural community who supports herself by selling marijuana. Grace and Diane haven’t spoken for nearly twenty years, and just as Grace hasn’t changed a bit over the years, Diane hasn’t found a way to forgive her for her failings as a parent. As mother and daughter get reacquainted, Zoe has her head turned by Cole (Chace Crawford), even though he’s a butcher and she doesn’t eat meat, and Jake falls for Tara (Marissa O’Donnell), who he meets at a coffee shop. And as Diane searches for common ground with Grace, she also finds time to be romanced by local musician Jude (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding received its world premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
