In Theaters

The Loneliest Planet
Where: Limited release; available on VOD on Tuesday, October 30.
What: A young couple hires a guide for a camping trip in the wilderness, with unexpected results.
Why Go: Director Julia Loktev previously made the quietly intense, terrorist-themed drama Day Night Day Night, and her newest film has received similar critical praise. From the sound of it, it’s best to know as little as possible going into the movie, but it certainly sounds like it will be an unsettling trip. Gael Garcia Bernal and Hani Furstenberg star as the engaged couple, with Bidzine Gujabidze as the local guide.

John McClane Blasts Through Moscow in New ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ Trailer

http://images.fandango.com/MDCsite/images/featured/201210/good-day-die-hard-poster_188x188.jpg

It’s A Good Day to Die Hard according to 20th Century Fox – and we’ve got the brand new Die Hard trailer to prove it.

Bruce Willis is back as renegade cop John McClane in the newest entry in the venerable action franchise – and it’s once again a family affair, as this time he’s teamed up with his son (Jai Courtney) in Moscow. Yippie-ki-yay…

The new clip shows an older Willis who still looks comfortable firing off one-liners and automatic weapons. We still have no real idea what the story is about – but we can tell you that Willis and son shoot up Moscow and lots of cars blow up. Do you really need to know more than that?

Mary Elizabeth Winstead turns up in the trailer as well, reprising her role as Lucy McClane.

Will A Good Day…

Horror-Spoof Roundup: ‘The Exorcist’ Sitcom, ‘Paranormal Activity’ Gets Honest, and More

http://images.fandango.com/MDCsite/images/featured/201210/laugh_188x188.jpg

Our friends at Film School Rejects have been at it again with this Exorcist trailer that's been recut to look like a 1980s sitcom. Since the bloody crab-walk scene still terrifies us, the fact that they managed to make us laugh when it pops up during the intro is pretty fantastic. They've also added a laugh track for the scenes where Regan teases Father Karras by opening the nightstand drawers and spits pea soup on him. They get an A+ for adding vintage commercials. The whole thing is twisted good fun, so check out the clip, and let us know what you think. [Spotted via BuzzFeed]

Screen Junkies came up with this "honest" Paranormal Activity trailer, which definitely makes it clear what side of the supernatural fence they're on, and it doesn't leave…

The Future of Robotics: Imagine a World without Workers

The Future of Robotics: Imagine a World without Workers

If any of us choose to look far enough into the future, they might see a day coming when no one will work, unless they just want to.  Though the common worker might fear for their job because of the possibility that their job could be replaced with a robot, a robot that is more efficient than a human is and no one would have to pay it. In addition, it would bring a big change to the world economy. That being said, those who would be workers would turn into something else, because there would no longer be need for workers, at least not in any mass form.

It is already predicted that robots will take over all the household choirs in the next 30 years, though I think we will see much more from robots in those 30 years outside the home also and it will begin to change society. I can see robots:

  • Checking you in at the hotel, you stay in while you travel on business, taking care of your wake-up call and having a taxi ready for you when you are ready to leave the next morning.
  •  Building homes, bridges, high-rises, everything; doing it all efficiently and during all kinds of weather.
  • Building automobiles, planes, textiles, steel, electronics, and any sort of mass production.
  • Teaching school and tending to children.
  • Providing medical care for the sick and injured.
  • Doing all the dirty jobs like digging ditches and mining for coal.
  • Doing all the dangerous jobs like wars, all kinds of protective services like police forces (think Robocop.)

The list goes on.

The question is; what happens to all those average workers? How do they then make a living? Perhaps an ownership society would become the norm for most people, such as investing into the stock market or other types of investments.  Of course and probably unfortunately, we will still have humans running our governments; maybe we would be better off with robots for that too.

There is one exception to the rule, which should be a good one at least for society and that has to do with creativity. I cannot believe that robots could even comprehend creativity. They cannot write, sing, paint or sculpt or any other form of creating art, from deep in their souls like humans can. This means surely that art in all its forms will become even more valuable to society. It might even encourage art and become one of the few successful ways for someone from poor means to go places in life. There are many fine examples among our celebrities even today from around the world.

Perhaps what we can count on is; Democratic governments will adjust their economy when it becomes evident that workers will mostly all be displaced and there will be no new jobs to provide for them.

I am sure there will be naysayers that will say robotics could never play such an important role but I think anyone would be naïve to think otherwise. I must admit; my theory is just a theory and based on no science. Still, we may reject the idea now that robots will take over all the work and therefore make our lives so much easier, and lazier I am sure, but technology only moves forward as long as there is an interest enough to fund it. That interest does not look like it will be abating anytime soon.

This idea may sound like something out of a science fiction novel to some, but we should look way beyond our own understanding to see the answer clearly. I am sure many of us will be long dead before that ever happens, but yes, it will happen.

I suppose the most we can hope for our ancestors is that our political differences across the globe will resolve and all people will be able to enjoy the prosperity, good health and happy lives, thanks to robots taking over all the work.  That surely is dreaming on my part I am sure. However, we can all count on it, no matter what else happens in this world, robots will be here for the future.

Secretary Clinton Speaks for Many Americans – to Muslim World

Secretary Clinton Speaks for Many Americans – to Muslim World

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, speaking at an Eid ul-Fitr reception marking the end of Ramadan, spoke clearly of what many Americans, especially Christians feel about the video at the center of the attacks on the embassy in Benghazi. The attack killed four U.S. Embassy staff, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

Her speech speaks for me and I believe it speaks for many Americans. In her speech, Clinton referred to the insults that other religions have endured, including Christianity, saying:

“When Christians are subject to insults to their faith, and that certainly happens, we expect them not to resort to violence. When Hindus or Buddhists are subjected to insults to their faiths, and that also certainly happens, we expect them not to resort to violence. The same goes for all faiths, including Islam.”

What impressed me most about the speech the Secretary made was the powerful message concerning violence and faith, pointing out that violence was “a sign of weakness in one’s faith”. She said at one point in the speech:

“I so strongly believe that the great religions of the world are stronger than any insults. They have withstood offense for centuries. Refraining from violence, then, is not a sign of weakness in one’s faith; it is absolutely the opposite, a sign that one’s faith is unshakable.”

It is my belief as a Christian; persecution will come. Jesus taught a “turn the other cheek” philosophy to his followers and it is a main principle of Christianity. Of course, many Christians in this country do not follow that principle very well. I also believe that if I had to go out and defend my religion — or in other words — defend my God with violence, then what does that say about my faith in a God that is supposedly all power?

I also believe we should respect all religions by not insulting them. Muslims see God in a different light than Christians do but then, God has many wonderful characters and surely, He can represent Himself to different people in different ways. However, Secretary Clinton is right; violence has no place alongside faith.

Clinton also spoke out against the bigotry that was at the heart of the video, making clear there were many who did not share the same hatred. In one point of her speech, she remarked:

“We can pledge that whenever one person speaks out in ignorance and bigotry, ten voices will answer. They will answer resoundingly against the offense and the insult; answering ignorance with enlightenment; answering hatred with understanding; answering darkness with light.”

I believe Secretary Clinton is trying to shine a light on a very important aspect of extremism and usually the bigotry and hatred that goes with it. There are extremist in every religion and usually those extremist are driven by hate, bigotry, and even ignorance. However, as the Secretary points out so poetically is, the true faithful of any religion answers hatred and ignorance, with enlightenment and understanding.

Many of the Muslims who were on the streets protesting against the video that was posted on YouTube, does not understand the freedoms that we have here and how the United States Government does not censor any American’s freedom to speak and that includes with media, such as the video which purportedly mocked the Prophet Mohammad. It is unfortunate they do not understand this about this country and our government.

I hope that the Secretary of the State’s words will resonate throughout the Muslim world and bring just a bit more understanding to those who would think America hates them, as this is not true. I believe most Americans would rather reach a hand out to Muslims — as we already have — than insult their religion.

Unfortunately, in a free society we must tolerate the bigots and extremist in our society as long as they do not incite violence. We also can speak with a loud voice that they do not represent the rest of us and Clinton expressed that beautifully.

She ended the speech with an exhortation to the great religions of the world to work toward peace and understanding, saying:

“In times like these, it can be easy to despair that some differences are irreconcilable, some mountains too steep to climb; we will therefore never reach the level of understanding and peacefulness that we seek, and which I believe the great religions of the world call us to pursue. “But that’s not what I believe, and I don’t think it’s what you believe… Part of what makes our country so special is we keep trying. We keep working. We keep investing in our future,”

Secretary Clinton is a valuable asset to this nation, a true diplomat, and a humble servant.  I do not know if she will run for president again in 2016 but she is very levelheaded and open-minded, ready to take on whatever challenge comes America’s way. At least that is my opinion of the woman, but I am sure I have plenty of company.

World of Warcraft patch 5.0.4 implements Pandaria talent system, major class changes

World of Warcraft patch 5.0.4 implements Pandaria talent system, major class changes

Blizzard’s massive 5.0.4 update for World of Warcraft hit servers today, bringing significant overhauls to the MMO’s talent system and class design as a forerunner for Mists of Pandaria’s release on September 25.

The new talent layout places higher specialization emphasis on certain core, class-defining abilities and reflects the significant class alterations previewed by Blizzard throughout the year. Hunters with no minimum ranges? Warriors no longer generating Rage from taking damage? Arcane Mages with more complex rotations? Crazy. What’s next, area-wide looting?

Well, yes, actually. A single right-click now scoops up all loot from nearby slain monsters, boosting leveling efficiency and severely diminishing the onset of sore kneecaps from stooping every two seconds.

Before your head spins in amazement like a well-timed Whirlwind, know that cross-realm zones also arrived to rescue underpopulated zones with round-the-clock player presence. If you’re grouping up with said players, check out the two Scenarios — expanded, more complex group quests — available for each faction when they switch on a few weeks before the expansion’s release.

We’ve scraped the surface of 5.0.4′s significance, but as always, Blizzard provided the full patch notes for our perusal. A handy survival guide exists as well.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted gameplay video shows open-world racing, complicated car names

You find it, you drive it. That’s Need for Speed: Most Wanted’s motto, and besides the novelty of finding hellishly expensive sports cars littered everywhere, Most Wanted’s open-world racing lets you check out player scoreboards, queue up a race, tinker with on-the-fly car mods, and evade the heat all as part of the seamless Autolog matchmaking system. If that isn’t enough, the trailer above exhibits some pretty slick rides — namely, the Aston Martin V12 Vantage and the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series, both ritzy roadsters that also happen to sound like names for computer parts. Watch them blur along the rain-slick industrial streets in a “Red Shift” circuit boasting more powerfully thrumming bass tracks than a Scion commercial.

Mass Effect 3: Leviathan DLC out now, expands single-player storyline

Mass Effect 3: Leviathan

Leviathan, BioWare’s second piece of singleplayer DLC for Mass Effect 3 (beyond the free Extended Cut) releases today on Origin for $ 10. Fans already exposed the majority of Leviathan’s content via rummaging among Extended Cut’s files, but BioWare hopes Leviathan gives players “the chance to really explore, discover, and learn more about the universe they love” through additional end-game dialog, cutscenes, characters, and explorable portions of the Citadel.

Shepard’s overflowing armory also receives the AT-12 Raider shotgun and M-55 Argus assault rifle. Both weapons were previously only obtainable as a pre-order bonus, so it’s always nice shooting Reapers in the face with new hardware. Are you picking up Leviathan? If so, what sort of story elements are you hoping to see addressed?
